Find how many gallons of paint you need for walls, ceilings, or exteriors.
Paint Calculator
What This Calculator Does
The Paint Calculator estimates the gallons of paint needed for walls, ceilings, and exterior surfaces. Enter the total surface area and the number of coats, and get the exact gallon and quart requirements for your painting project.
Paint coverage depends on surface texture and color. One gallon of quality paint covers approximately 400 square feet per coat on smooth, primed surfaces. Rough surfaces (stucco, brick, textured walls) reduce coverage to 250-300 sq ft per gallon.
Standard practice is two coats for interior walls: a primer coat followed by the finish color. One gallon typically covers a 12x12 room (384 sq ft of wall area) with one coat. The calculator lets you adjust from 1 to 3 coats.
How to Use
- Measure the total wall or surface area in square feet. Use our Room Size Calculator for quick wall area calculation.
- Select the number of coats: 1 for touch-up, 2 for standard, 3 for dramatic color changes.
- Enter the area and select coats in the calculator above.
- Click "Calculate" to get gallons and quarts needed.
- Buy all paint at once to ensure color consistency - different batches may vary slightly.
How to Calculate Paint
Calculating paint requirements combines area measurement with the paint manufacturer's coverage rate. Here is the standard approach:
- Measure wall area. Calculate the room perimeter (2 x (length + width)) and multiply by ceiling height to get gross wall area. Subtract doors (21 sq ft each) and windows (15 sq ft each) for net wall area.
- Add ceiling area. If painting the ceiling, multiply room length by width for ceiling square footage.
- Determine coverage. Most interior latex paints cover 350-400 sq ft per gallon on smooth, primed surfaces. Check the manufacturer label for the exact spread rate.
- Divide by coverage. Total area divided by coverage per gallon gives the number of gallons needed per coat.
- Multiply by coats. Multiply by the number of coats (standard is 2 for interior walls). Always round up to the nearest quart or gallon.
For trim, doors, and cabinets, calculate linear footage and multiply by the width to get surface area. Trim paint typically covers 400-500 linear feet per gallon for standard 3-inch baseboards.
Practical Measurement Tips
- Primer matters. Use a dedicated primer for bare drywall, stained surfaces, or drastic color changes. Primer is cheaper than finish paint and ensures better adhesion and color accuracy.
- Surface preparation. Clean walls, patch holes, and sand rough spots before painting. Dirt and grease prevent paint adhesion. Use TSP (trisodium phosphate) cleaner for kitchen and bathroom walls.
- Painting order. Cut in edges first with a brush (2-3 inch angled sash brush), then roll the main wall areas with a 3/8-inch or 1/2-inch nap roller. Paint ceilings first, then walls, then trim.
- Temperature. Paint at 50-85 degrees F for best results. Latex paint applied below 50 degrees may not form a proper film and can peel. Direct sunlight on the wall during painting causes flash drying.
- Storage. Leftover paint sealed tightly can last 2-5 years. Store cans upside down to create an airtight seal around the lid. Write the room name on the can for touch-up use.
Worked Examples
Standard Bedroom Paint
A 12 x 14 ft bedroom with 9-ft ceilings, one door (21 sq ft), two windows (15 sq ft each), including ceiling and two coats.
- →Wall perimeter: 2 x (12 + 14) = 52 ft.
- →Gross wall area: 52 ft x 9 ft = 468 sq ft.
- →Subtract openings: 468 - 21 - 30 = 417 sq ft net wall area.
- →Ceiling area: 12 x 14 = 168 sq ft.
- →Total area per coat: 417 + 168 = 585 sq ft.
- →At 350 sq ft/gallon: 585 / 350 = 1.67 gallons per coat.
- →Two coats: 1.67 x 2 = 3.34 gallons. Buy 4 gallons.
Result: 4 gallons of paint needed for walls (2 coats) and ceiling (2 coats).
A 5-gallon bucket is often more economical than individual gallons. If using the same color throughout, buy the 5-gallon size and you will have extra for touch-ups.
Living Room Accent Wall
One 12 x 9 ft accent wall with one door (21 sq ft), three coats of premium paint.
- →Wall area: 12 ft x 9 ft = 108 sq ft.
- →Subtract door: 108 - 21 = 87 sq ft.
- →Three coats: 87 x 3 = 261 sq ft total coverage needed.
- →At 350 sq ft/gallon: 261 / 350 = 0.75 gallons.
- →Buy 1 gallon (or 3 quarts if available).
Result: 1 gallon covers the accent wall with 3 coats.
Accent walls using deep or saturated colors often require 3-4 coats for even coverage. Premium paint in dark colors has lower hide - consider a tinted primer first.
Waste Factors by Material
Always order more than your exact calculated quantity. Material suppliers typically do not accept returns on cut or opened materials. The waste factor accounts for cuts at walls, corners, defects, and installation error.
| Surface Type | Coverage per Gallon | Waste Factor | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smooth drywall (primed) | 350-400 sq ft | Standard interior latex on primed surface with roller application | Drywall Calculator |
| Textured walls (knockdown, orange peel) | 250-300 sq ft | Texture absorbs more paint; use thicker nap roller | Drywall Calculator |
| Stucco or brick exterior | 150-250 sq ft | Highly porous surface requires significantly more paint | Fence Paint Calculator |
| Smooth wood trim | 400-500 linear ft | Based on standard 3-inch trim; adjust width proportionally | Fence Paint Calculator |
| Ceilings (smooth) | 350-400 sq ft | Flat or matte sheen recommended for ceilings | Room Size Calculator |
Reference Table
| Room Size | Wall Area | 1 Coat | 2 Coats | 3 Coats |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 x 10 ft (8 ft) | 320 sq ft | 0.8 gal | 1.6 gal | 2.4 gal |
| 12 x 12 ft (8 ft) | 384 sq ft | 1.0 gal | 1.9 gal | 2.9 gal |
| 12 x 16 ft (8 ft) | 448 sq ft | 1.1 gal | 2.2 gal | 3.4 gal |
| 14 x 18 ft (9 ft) | 576 sq ft | 1.4 gal | 2.9 gal | 4.3 gal |
| 20 x 20 ft (8 ft) | 640 sq ft | 1.6 gal | 3.2 gal | 4.8 gal |
How We Calculate
Coverage Calculation
The calculator uses a standard coverage rate of 350 square feet per gallon, which is the conservative industry average for interior latex paint on smooth, primed surfaces. The formula is: Gallons = (Total Area x Number of Coats) / Coverage per Gallon. Results are rounded up to the nearest 1/4 gallon for practical ordering.
Sheen Guide
Paint sheen affects both appearance and durability. Flat or matte finishes hide imperfections but are harder to clean - best for ceilings and low-traffic areas. Eggshell and satin offer a balance of durability and appearance for most rooms. Semi-gloss and high-gloss are easiest to clean and recommended for trim, doors, and kitchens.
Important Note
Coverage rates are estimates. Actual coverage varies by paint brand (premium paints typically have higher solids and better coverage), application method (spraying uses more paint than rolling), surface texture, and temperature. Always check the manufacturer's product data sheet for the specific spread rate of your chosen paint.
