What This Calculator Does

The Framing Calculator computes the number of studs, top and bottom plates, and total wall area for wood-frame wall construction. Enter the wall length, ceiling height, and stud spacing to get a complete material count for standard residential framing.

Wood framing (stick framing) is the dominant construction method for US residential buildings. A typical wall section consists of vertical studs at 16 or 24 inches on-center, a double top plate, a single bottom plate, and additional studs for corners and openings.

Stud spacing affects both structural strength and material cost: 16-inch OC provides stiffer walls and is required for 2-story construction; 24-inch OC is allowed for single-story walls and reduces lumber cost by approximately 30%.

How to Use

  1. Measure the total wall length in feet (for multiple walls, add all lengths together).
  2. Select the ceiling height (standard 8 ft or 9 ft) and stud spacing (16 in or 24 in OC).
